SUMMARY:Session 4: Case Management Fundamentals: Housing Focused Practices
DESCRIPTION:This session provides an in-depth overview of evidence-based techniques for engaging and enrolling individuals in crisis shelter and rehousing interventions without imposing preconditions for eligibility. The training covers core principles of Critical Time Intervention (CTI)\, housing-focused practices\, and the use of housing as a stabilization platform for addressing mental health and substance use disorders. Participants will learn strategies for responding to housing crises in ways that avoid creating additional barriers\, as well as how to apply housing-forward approaches across outreach\, shelter\, drop-in centers\, and intake settings. The session also examines the impact of mental illness and substance use disorders within the context of homelessness and offers guidance on structuring required supportive service participation in a client-centered\, non-punitive manner. Emphasis is placed on warm handoffs and coordinated engagement practices that promote continuity of care and support successful transitions. \nLearning Objectives\n1. Participants understand basics of housing-forward practices.\n2. Participants understand importance of harm reduction in achieving engagement and stabilization goals.\n3. Participants understand importance of personalized supportive services that are not tied to housing retention. \nThe training will be held virtually over Zoom.

SUMMARY:Session 9: Housing Stability & Eviction Prevention: Tools and Strategies to Assess and Minimize Risk
DESCRIPTION:This training equips case managers with the specialized skills needed to stabilize individuals transitioning from homelessness into permanent housing during the critical first few months. Participants will explore the psychological and practical shifts of housing focused transitions and learn structured approaches for proactive risk assessment to identify early warning signs of housing instability\, such as behavioral changes and financial stressors. By integrating evidence-based prevention tools and collaborative problem-solving strategies\, case managers will learn how to build “tenancy toolkits” designed to strengthen client independence\, support clients in effectively communicating with landlords\, and promote successful household management. The session ultimately aims to give case managers the skills and knowledge needed to reduce the risk of housing loss and improve long term housing stability for program participants. \nLearning Objectives\n1. Participants can apply the basics of Motivational Interviewing\, housing planning\, trauma-responsive care\, and housing-focused strategies.\n2. Participants understand how to create a client-centered housing plan that address risk of loss of housing\, and how to mitigate risks.\n3. Participants have templates for engaging landlords and property management companies when clients are at risk of losing housing. \nThis training will be held virtually over Zoom.
